Eligibility & Registration
Eligibility
To take the ILE, the candidate’s state or provincial licensing agency needs to inform IHS that they are eligible to take the exam. Find out more about becoming eligible to take the ILE in your jurisdiction by contacting your state or provincial licensing agency and/or visiting its website.
Registration
Within one business day of receiving the notification from the licensing agency that a candidate is eligible, IHS sends the candidate an instructional email. That email contains the Study Guide and instructions for creating an account on the exam registration website. Only candidates who have been deemed eligible and received this instructional email may create an account and take the exam.
Think you should have received your email from IHS but don’t see it? Check your spam/junk folder before contacting IHS for assistance.
Once an eligible candidate has created their account, there is a 72-hour waiting period for the account to be verified and activated. After the 72-hour waiting period, the candidate will be able to log in to their account and register for the exam. There will not be a notification that the waiting period is over. Detailed registration instructions are provided in the Study Guide.
In almost every jurisdiction that uses the ILE, candidates can take the exam at any testing center at any available and convenient time. For example, if there aren’t any testing centers open in the state a candidate lives in, they could travel to a neighboring state and take the exam there. Check with your licensing agency to be sure this is acceptable in your jurisdiction before scheduling an exam out of state.
Testing Centers
Explore the network of testing centers here. Testing centers that appear in the search may or may not have availability on a candidate’s desired test date. All testing center availability is determined by the testing center itself, not by the exam delivery company or IHS. Actual exam appointment availability can only be seen once a candidate is eligible to take the exam and is logged in to their test-taker account.
Note that many testing centers are closed due to COVID-19. IHS recommends contacting a testing center directly to verify that it is open and accepting exam appointments before paying the registration fee.
Rescheduling or Canceling an Exam
Exams can be canceled or rescheduled up to 72 hours prior to the exam appointment with no fees. Exams canceled or rescheduled within 72 hours of the appointment will incur a fee. Exams canceled or rescheduled within 24 hours of the appointment will forfeit the entire exam fee. Candidates receiving accommodations must contact IHS to cancel or reschedule their exam; all relevant fees apply.
Re-taking the Exam
To schedule a re-take, candidates must be deemed eligible to re-take by their licensing agency. Within one business day of receiving the notification of eligibility, IHS will contact the candidate with instructions for registering for a re-take. To find out more about becoming eligible to re-take the exam, contact your state or provincial licensing agency.
